Falling in love with the game

I play tennis simply because I love to play. I love this game. I love the adrenaline you get during a big match. And of course, winning a match or a tournament is an amazing feeling.

My first experience with tennis was when I was six. I was watching a tennis match on TV and I really liked the look of it. And fortunately, we had a kids’ tennis court next to our house. My mum took me and I liked it straight away. That’s how my journey started.

I grew up watching Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis. They were great inspirations for me as a young girl and really showed me the importance of always giving your best and never giving up. There’s a great quote from Winston Churchill that really backs that up: “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

“I PLAY TENNIS SIMPLY BECAUSE I LOVE TO PLAY. I LOVE THIS GAME.”

My best so far

I’ve been really fortunate to have some great career highlights already. I reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2014 and 2015. I reached the quarter final of US Open doubles in 2014. Third round of Australian Open and US Open in 2014. But the proudest moment so far in my career was my 2017 ATP title in Tokyo. This one means so much to me. It was my first ever win and I was coming back after injury. Those are always special. Obviously my aim is to one day win a Grand Slam title. That’s what I work towards.

Day in. Day out.

My daily routine is different, depending if I’m in a tournament or pre-season. In pre-season I wake up, have breakfast, then have a tennis session, a fitness session, go for some lunch, rest a bit, then have another training session, then go to the physio for some treatment. It’s really important to stay in shape.

Keeping in shape is really important with all the travelling we do. That can be tough on your body. Every week we’re in a different city, a different country. It’s a difficult part of the tennis life. But it’s nice, because we see different countries and cultures. I like to travel, I like seeing new places and my family often travel with me so it’s really nice to be with them and have those experiences.

Wimbledon is my favourite tournament to travel to. I love the atmosphere, the tradition with everyone in white. There’s a really special atmosphere and I like playing on grass.

Staying grounded

It’s important to have interests away from tennis. To get a little space from the sport on occasion. I like watching ice skating and boxing. Very different sports, but I enjoy them both. I also enjoy reading, seeing my friends, going to the cinema, shopping. And when I’m home, I like going to the mountains. The scenery is amazing.
