Falling in love with the game

When I was young, my mum told me to do sport to build my body strong and there was a tennis court very near to my house. So I started playing tennis and I enjoyed it straight away.

I like tennis, because it’s something you can gradually improve and you can see yourself getting better. In tennis, you have to always do something you’re not good at. To challenge yourself. You have to try every day, every moment on the court.

If I try my best, the result doesn’t matter. It’s okay.

My best so far

In 2018, I eliminated Venus Williams in the first round of the French Open. That was my biggest moment so far in tennis. I hope I will have many more. I try to just play well every time.

For me, playing well, means playing with high intensity and being mentally strong. That’s why both physical and mental shape are very important for a tennis player. If you’re not strong physically, you can’t be strong mentally.

Day in. Day out.

My daily routine is very simple – I warm up, play tennis, cool down, relax and enjoy the day. Nothing special. I like to keep things simple.

Staying grounded

Travelling for me is hard. I’m Chinese and I like Chinese food. So I always look for good Chinese food wherever I’m traveling. Thankfully, we can usually find something. It’s important to me, to try and keep it easy and keeping a taste of home wherever I go, that makes it easier for me.

My team is great at helping me to stay grounded. They’re all Chinese, so when we travel, we go and find Chinese food together, we go shopping together, we do everything together. When I’m with my team, everything is easier.

My Pro tips

My best tip is ‘be happy and keep going’. For both tennis and life.

This is important, because you have to try to be happy and be nice to everyone around you.

Picking yourself up after a bad match, or a bad day is hard. But the first thing is to forget it and realise that tomorrow is a new day and try to be positive and fight all over again.

Because in your life, you’ll have good times, bad things, good people, bad people, you can’t be happy all the time. But you will always find a way.
