Ali Farag has clinched his 3rd World Championship victory in a row and his 4th overall by winning in straight games against fellow Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad 3-0: 12-10, 11-6, 11-6 (44m)
Farag has claimed consecutive Platinum-level wins after taking the British Open title, and the 4 World Championships puts him on the same level as Geoff Hunt and Amr Shabana in terms of men’s World Championship wins.
Despite Gawad taking an early 9-5 lead in the opening game, Farag managed to fight back and win the tiebreak. He then dominated the second game, winning 11-6 in just eight minutes. While there was a there was a brief pause in play, it was Farag who returned the stronger.
“The emotions are so raw, it’s so hard to put it into words,” said Farag.
“It’s so special. No matter how many times you go through it, it’s even more special than the time before. Especially against such a champion like Karim, I’m super relieved and super happy.
“Two months ago we played a practice match and we were limping and the standard wouldn’t have even earned us a place in the World Championship, let alone the final. To come all the way through to reach the final is a very proud achievement for the two of us.”
