It was a dream night for Ali Farag at the Tournament of Champions where he pulled off a stunning victory against the World No.1 Mohamed Elshorbagy to claim his first title at the iconic Grand Central Terminal in New York.
It was no easy task for Farag who did things the hard way, going two games to love down in what is being called one of the most dramatic finals ever witnessed at the Tournament of Champions. He looked out of the running after finding himself 6-2 in the third game. However, somehow Farag found his form and stormed on to take the next 9 points and subsequently the match, winning 10-12, 6-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-8.
It wasn’t just the fact that it was his first title at the Tournament of Champions that made the night so special, it means that Farag will now be crowned World No.1 for the first time in his career in March.
“It’s been a dream of mine since a very young age to reach that No.1 spot,” said Farag afterwards.
“To do it in such a fashion in front of so many greats of the game, in front of the love of my life [wife, Nour El Tayeb], and my parents watching at home, it couldn’t get any better really… It was very emotional.”
It’s Farag’s third title of the season, having won in San Francisco and Qatar, and arguably the biggest of his career. He will now set his sights on the World Championships in Chicago that are just under a month away and feel he has an incredible chance to really cement himself at the very top of the sport.
