It has been another first for Ali Farag as he won his maiden title at El Gouna. It is Farag’s 17th title on the PSA tour and 6th this year alone. This time round it was ultimately a comfortable evening for the Egyptian who won out 11-9, 12-10, 11-3 in 46 minutes after his opponent Karim Abdel Gawad suffered an ankle injury in the third game.
It’s a first title on home soil since 2015 and would have been a victory of great vindication for Farag after losing in the final of El Gouna in 2018 to Marwan Elshorbagy while also losing in the final of the black ball squash open to Karim Abdel Gawad himself a few months earlier.
“This season has been amazing for me, I couldn’t have asked for a better one. I might have won a lot of big titles, like the World Championships and claiming that No.1 spot at the ToC, but this one is a very special one as I’m sharing it in front of my people.”
Ali Farag will next be in action at the British Open in Hull between May 20-26.
